What Consumes the Most Water In My Home?

Feeling overwhelmed when it comes to your monthly water consumption bill? Each time it can seem nearly impossible that the amount owed matches the amount used, and that can be frustrating. Luckily, we’re here to tell you how to keep your bill manageable and even which appliances use the most water so you can better control your usage.

1. Toilets

The number one appliance that uses your water the most is going to be your toilet. Toilets use an estimated 27%-37% of the water that is consumed in your house. Older toilets are even known to use at least six to eight gallons per flush. The average person flushes their toilet up to five times a day, often times flushing non-sanitary items that could just be thrown away in a trashcan.

2. Washing Machine

The next item that is going to use up a lot of your water is your washing machine, which makes up 22% of the water consumed. Washers come in a variety of different sizes and capacities so this number could be different for each household. Older washers can use 14 to 25 gallons of water per each load, and the average American family does over 400 loads of laundry each year.

3. Showers

The amount of time Americans spend in the shower definitely affects their water bill, but thankfully this is something that can always be adjusted. The average American showers for 8-10 minutes a day, and this can use up to 2 gallons a minute. This means a ten minute shower could use up to 200 gallons of water.

What Can I Do To Adjust My Bill?

Water ConsumptionThere are many things you can do to make your finances less stressful when it comes to paying the water bill. Follow these tips to save yourself some money as well as help the environment.

  • Do not use your toilet as a trash can. Only flush necessary items.
  • Invest in a newer toilet that has high efficiency (HET) which is designed to save more water in its usage.
  • Only run full loads in your washer, it’s much more efficient.
  • Set a goal to take a 3 to 5 minute shower. You will still be clean and will have saved so much water.
  • Use extra water that you would usually waste when you are letting the shower heat up to water plants or for other household chores.
