Ways to Detect a Water Leak in Your Home

If a Easton homeowner begins to see their water bills rise each month, the chance of a water leak in the home is highly likely. However, trying to detect the cause of the leak can take some time, so it’s imperative to contact a plumber as soon as possible to get to the root of the problem.

Easton, PA Water-Leak-Detection-ServicesWhile some water leaks can be relatively small and can be fixed quickly, others may be more complex and need more time and money to properly fix. No matter the cause of the leak, there are many ways to detect a water leak in the home.

Leaking Humidifiers

For homes that have central HVAC systems for their heating and cooling needs, humidifiers can sometimes develop leaks that can grow worse over time. In most cases, the cause of the leak is a refill valve that is malfunctioning, allowing water to go directly to the sewer.

These leaks can be hard to detect, and can sometimes persist for months or years before the cause is finally known. To detect the leak, a plumber can look for moisture on the inside of the furnace and surrounding ductwork, which indicates a leak exists.

Dripping Faucets

A common problem when it comes to leaks in a home, dripping faucets can be easy to spot and easy to fix. While it may sound like a trivial problem, the amount of water wasted can be staggering.

In fact, it’s estimated a dripping faucet can waste anywhere from 300-1,200 gallons of water annually, depending upon how fast it is dripping. While considered an easy repair, it’s best to let a licensed plumber handle it to ensure the repair is done properly.

Leaking Pipes

In many cases where a leak is present, pipes can be the cause. A problem especially in older homes, pipes that have been left unattended for years can over time develop cracks or holes due to rust, corrosion, or other types of damage.

This occurs most often in pipes that are constantly exposed to cold temperatures in such areas of homes as basements, crawlspaces, attics, and garages. If a damaged pipe is the problem, a plumber should be called to examine the pipes and repair them as soon as possible.

As an added precaution, the pipes in your Easton home should then be insulated with foam or heating tape to prevent them from further damage from cold temperatures in the future.
