How to be Eco-Friendly by Going Green

As a homeowner, you do everything that you can to protect and preserve your investment in your home. You should adopt the same approach when trying to protect the planet. Over generations, human actions, technologies, and behaviors have evolved and have done damage to the earth.

While there is much to be done to preserve the planet, change begins with individuals committing to taking small steps. It comes down to being committed to the change and being consistent in your efforts.

From small steps like carpooling, to larger steps like updating your plumbing fixtures, every effort counts to help the planet.

Here are some ideas on how you can get your green on:

Start with the Bathroom

save-water Your bathroom is an area of your home that is notorious for water waste. You can change that simply by installing eco-friendly plumbing fixtures.

Toilets account for nearly a third of your home’s total water use. That’s a lot of water. Consider replacing your toilet with a low-flow option.

To make your toilet even more efficient, put in a dual flusher, which lets you regulate the amount of water that you use when you flush. A motion sensor faucet will reduce water waste, as will a low-flow showerhead.

What Kind of Water Heater do you Have?

Do you use an older storage tank water heater? When making your home green, a tankless water heater is a must-have.

They are more energy efficient because they heat water on demand, rather than storing water. Because they are more energy efficient, they are more cost-effective as well.

Stop Buying Bottled Water

While there is no denying the good taste and the convenience of bottled water, it’s not very environmentally friendly. A green option is to install a water filter at home. You can have a filter attached right to the faucet, on the countertop or under the sink.

What type of filter you need depends a lot on the water in your area. Filters are very effective in removing impurities and are eco-friendly.

Start to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

As you slowly go green, it is time to reduce your carbon footprint wherever you can. Park your car in the garage and walk to do your errands. carbon-footprint

Carpool to go to work. Make sure that your car is well maintained and that your tires are properly inflated, which will give you better gas mileage.

Recycle water from a rain barrel or from your cooking liquid to water plants. Always recycle and look for recycled or upcycled products when making a purchase.

Start reading your magazines and newspapers online. Eat locally grown food. Switch to meatless meals once or twice a week.
