Signs Your Home Needs To Be Repiped

RepipePotential plumbing issues are often overlooked until disaster strikes. For most homeowners, a major plumbing job, such as repiping, may seem like too large of an expense. Many find themselves putting it off until it is too late. Once it is too late, you will likely find that the price of prevention would have been far less than the price of repairing damage caused by outdated pipes. That is why it is important to know some of the warning signs of a plumbing system that may need to be repiped.

Leaks are one of the most obvious signs that the pipe system is in need of maintenance or replacement. Although a leak may be a sign of a faulty valve, joint, or individual pipe, it sometimes is a symptom of a bigger problem. A problem that is should be addressed sooner rather than later.

Faucets that spray water in spurts, or with hesitation, can be a sign of air in the pipes. Pipes degrade over time. If yours have degraded enough to let air in the lines then it is time to consider repiping.

Water pressure loss can be another telltale sign. If you turn the faucet on, what should be, full blast and it only results in a trickle, you could be looking at a critical plumbing issue. Corrosion could be blocking the pipes.

Discolored water should raise alarm bells. Does your water contain rust? How about sediment? Even if it isn’t readily visible in the water, look for stains in your shower, sink or toilet.

Color isn’t the only factor, taste is as well. If your water has begun to taste off, you need to have it checked for possible contamination. This may sometimes be the result of a change in the municipal system or a filter that needs to be changed, but other times it can be a sign that you are in need of a pipe replacement.

Knowing when to have your home repiped isn’t always easy. With personal vigilance and the help of professionals, when necessary, you can save yourself from facing costly repairs down the line.
