Why is Your Water Discolored?

In many Easton homes, one of the most common problems involves water that suddenly becomes discolored. Whether coming out of the kitchen faucet or the bathtub, discolored water means there’s a problem with the home’s plumbing system. While some people may not worry about the water’s color and continue to drink it, use it for cooking, and even bathe in it, that’s not considered to be the smartest option.

Because of the many possibilities as to why water may be discolored, it’s always best to contact a plumber and let them assess the situation and make whatever repairs may be needed to solve the problem.

In many cases, the water will be colored red, yellow, or orange. This usually indicates rust in the pipes, which can happen frequently in pipes of older homes. To make sure this is the problem, a plumber should be called to examine the water’s color and test it to determine the exact cause.

If rust turns out to be the problem, the pipes will need to be replaced. In some cases, the rust may be coming not from the home’s pipes, but from the water lines of the town or city. Whatever the source, the problem will need to be corrected as soon as possible. The water can still be used in these cases, but most people choose not to until the problem is fixed.

Bluish-Green Water

While red, yellow, or orange water may indicate rust in the pipes, water that turns a bluish-green color may indicate a far more serious problem. This may indicate copper or brass seeping into the water from plumbing fittings, which can be very dangerous. If this is the case, a plumber will need to be called immediately to examine the fittings and replace them. Otherwise, the water will continue to remain poisoned and unable to be used for anything.

Brown Water

While dark water generally won’t hurt people if it’s drank, the majority of people will not touch it until it has become clear once again. Brown water usually is an indicator of dirt and minerals in the water, but it can also indicate mold or even sewage may be present. In these situations, an Easton plumber should be called to test the water and examine the home’s water lines, and this water should not be used until the problem has been properly diagnosed and the necessary repairs made.
